Floodplain Information
If you are looking into building, or adding on to, a structure that falls in a Special Flood Hazard Area you are required to apply for a Barton County Floodplain Development Permit through the County Engineer's Office. Use the two viewer links below to check the floodplain map at your location. Contact the County Engineer at 620-793-1808 for assistance.
You will need to zoom in before the Special Flood Hazard Areas are visible. In the upper right corner click on "Basemaps" and choose "Satellite" or "Hybrid" for an aerial view. Expand the "Layers" tab on the left side of the screen and check the box next to "Advisory Floodplains" to see areas that are outside of the regulatory floodplain but are in the 0.2% chance (500-year) floodplain.
FEMA National Flood Hazard Layer Viewer
Type in an address or zoom in to see the flood hazard areas. Click on the layer list in the upper right corner to change the features that are displayed. For example, in the NFHL layer choose the "LOMAs" box to see where Letters of Map Amendment have been issued. LOMAs typically indicate where a structure or property has been surveyed and proven to be above the base flood elevation and thus removed from the regulatory floodplain.

Barton County Floodplain Development Permit Application(Fillable Form)
The purpose of floodplain regulations is to promote public health, safety, and general welfare, and to minimize flood losses by applying provisions designed to:
- Restrict or prohibit uses which are dangerous to health, safety or property in times of flooding or cause undue increases in flood heights or velocities.
- Require that uses vulnerable to floods, including public facilities which serve such uses, be provided with flood protection at the time of initial construction.
- Protect individuals from buying lands which are unsuited for intended purposes because of flood hazards.
